Price summary

Flying is obviously not a cheap hobby or career choice, but it’s not necessarily beyond reach. Below is a summary of the hourly rates and what you can expect to be paying in order to obtain and then maintain your licence and ratings. Prices are approximate and may be subject to change. Please note that in some cases, charges incurred are beyond the control of Fenland Flying School (eg. Medicals and landing fees) and the prices quoted are estimates only.

Aircraft Instructional Rates (Per Hour)

Cessna 150/152

£ 130.00

Cessna 172

£ 145.00

A student is subject to the above rates throughout their training regardless of whether the flight is with an instructor or solo time (the instructor has to be available to brief the student and send them solo).

Private Pilots Licence

The following is based upon obtaining a licence within the (JAR-FCL) 45 hour minimum in a Cessna 150/152 and with first time passes in all of the theoretical knowledge exams. Some costs* (the medical for example) are approximate and all are subject to change, but it gives the prospective pilot an idea of what to budget for. Students considering an NPPL are subject to a reduced minimum training requirement, but experience has shown that many take as long as JAR-FCL students to reach a safe standard.

Maintaining Your Licence

This very much depends upon the type of aircraft flown and how much you intend to fly. The minimum for a JAR-FCL PPL holder is 12 hours in the second year of the validity of the rating. On a Cessna 152 this will cost £1250 per year based on the present aircraft hire rate (below) and the 1 hour instructional flight, any additional costs for membership or upkeep of medical etc, are not included.

Aircraft Hire Rate

Cessna 150/152

£ 100

Cessna 172

£ 115

We do offer a discount scheme which would reduce the cost slightly on the 12 hours for that year, but it is designed to give a greater discount the more you fly.

Night Rating

The Night Rating assumes a minimum of 5 hours of dual instruction. It can be conducted in either the Cessna 150/152 of Cessna 172. Unless you need to obtain additional equipment such as a torch or land at an airfield other than Fenland/Temporary FAC membership, there are no extra costs above the instructional rates.

Cessna 150/152

£ 650

Cessna 172

£ 705

Additionally, the CAA impose a charge for the issue of the rating which is currently £84.

IMC Rating

The IMC rating requires 15 hours of dual instruction on the Cessna 172. Students are liable for approach fees at airfields away from fenland and temporary FAC membership fees if required.
